New Delhi: With the 2026 Assembly elections drawing closer, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has stepped up efforts to make voting smoother and more comfortable for citizens across the country. Elections are scheduled in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, along with bye-elections in six other states.
In a recent directive, the Commission has asked officials to ensure that all 2,18,807 polling stations are fully equipped with basic facilities on polling day. The idea is simple — make sure every voter, regardless of age or physical ability, can cast their vote without inconvenience.
These basic arrangements, known as Assured Minimum Facilities (AMFs), include essentials such as clean drinking water, shaded waiting areas, toilets with water, proper lighting and clear signage. Special attention has also been given to accessibility, with ramps to support persons with disabilities. In addition, benches will be placed at regular intervals so that people, especially the elderly, do not have to stand for long periods in queues.
To help voters navigate the process easily, standardised Voter Facilitation Posters will be displayed at every polling station. These will provide key information such as candidate lists, voting guidelines and required identification documents.
Further easing the process, Voter Assistance Booths will be set up outside polling stations. Staffed by trained officials, these booths will help people quickly locate their polling details, saving time and reducing confusion.
In a thoughtful move, arrangements will also be made for voters to safely deposit their mobile phones before entering polling stations, ensuring compliance with rules without causing inconvenience.
The Election Commission has made it clear that these measures are not optional. Officials have been directed to complete all preparations well in advance, aiming to provide voters with a smooth, safe and dignified voting experience.
