OSOP

New Delhi: A quiet yet impactful transformation is taking place across India’s railway stations, where local craftsmanship is finding a national stage through the One Station One Product (OSOP) initiative. Introduced in the Union Budget 2022–23, the initiative is steadily turning railway platforms into vibrant marketplaces that celebrate regional identity while creating meaningful livelihood opportunities.

Launched on 25 March 2022, OSOP was designed to promote indigenous products by offering dedicated retail spaces at railway stations. What began as a 15-day pilot across 19 stations has now expanded into a nationwide movement. Today, more than 2,000 railway stations host around 2,326 OSOP outlets, benefiting over 1.32 lakh individuals as of January 2026.

The idea is simple yet powerful. Railway stations, which see millions of passengers daily, are being used as accessible platforms for artisans, weavers, farmers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to showcase and sell their products. Stalls are allotted on a rotational basis at nominal charges, ensuring that more individuals and groups get a fair chance to participate. The scheme is implemented by railway divisions in coordination with state agencies and MSMEs, making the process inclusive and well-organised.

What makes OSOP stand out is its strong connection to local identity. Each station reflects the cultural and economic essence of its region through the products on display. For instance, at Tenkasi Junction in Tamil Nadu, finely crafted cane products highlight traditional skills, while Patna Railway Station showcases the globally recognised Madhubani paintings, giving local artists a wider audience.

Across the country, similar stories are unfolding. At Asansol Railway Station in West Bengal, a kiosk on Platform 4 displays handloom bags, artefacts and carpets. Travellers waiting for trains often stop by, not just to shop but to experience a slice of the region’s culture. In Chennai’s Moore Market Complex Railway Station, cotton handloom products underline Tamil Nadu’s rich textile heritage, while an attar stall offers traditional fragrances that connect visitors with age-old practices.

In Odisha, the impact is particularly visible at Balangir Railway Station. A small toy stall run by local artisans and SHGs has become a source of steady income for many, especially women. Colourful handcrafted stuffed toys attract passengers, and the consistent footfall ensures regular sales. This has not only strengthened livelihoods but also boosted confidence among artisans who earlier had limited access to markets.

Moving west, Jaipur Junction in Rajasthan presents the vibrant Sanganeri print textiles, drawing attention from travellers who appreciate the intricate designs. Similarly, at Tatanagar Railway Station in Jharkhand, locally made handicrafts are finding buyers from across the country, expanding the reach of artisans beyond their immediate surroundings.

At its core, OSOP is about inclusion and empowerment. The initiative specifically focuses on those who traditionally struggled to access formal markets. By connecting them directly with consumers, it helps sustain traditional crafts while encouraging entrepreneurship at the grassroots level. It also aligns strongly with the broader vision of promoting ‘Vocal for Local’, where local products are given national visibility.

Beyond economics, the initiative is also reshaping the travel experience. Railway stations are no longer just transit points; they are becoming spaces where culture, commerce and community come together. Travellers are not just buying products—they are engaging with stories, traditions and the people behind them.

The growing network of OSOP outlets shows how existing public infrastructure can be used creatively to drive inclusive growth. It demonstrates that development does not always require new spaces; sometimes, it is about reimagining the ones we already have.

As the initiative continues to expand, it offers a compelling model for linking local talent with national platforms. By bringing India’s rich and diverse heritage to railway platforms, OSOP ensures that these traditions travel far and wide, reaching every corner of the country through everyday journeys.
