New Delhi: With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, enforcement agencies have stepped up vigilance across poll-bound states, leading to seizures exceeding ₹650 crore, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The ECI had announced the election schedule on March 15 for Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, along with bye-elections in six states. Strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been put in place to ensure fair and transparent polling.

To maintain a smooth electoral process, the Commission held several review meetings with senior officials, including Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police, from both poll-bound and neighbouring states. The focus has been clear—conduct elections that are free from violence, intimidation and inducements.

On the ground, surveillance has been intensified. More than 5,173 flying squads have been deployed to respond to complaints within 100 minutes. In addition, over 5,200 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs) are carrying out surprise checks at key locations.

Data from the Electronic Seizure Management System (ESMS), active since February 26, shows that total seizures have reached ₹651.51 crore as of April 5. West Bengal recorded the highest seizures at ₹319 crore, followed by Tamil Nadu at ₹170 crore and Assam at ₹97 crore. Kerala and Puducherry reported seizures worth ₹58 crore and ₹7 crore respectively.

The seizures include cash, liquor, drugs, precious metals and other inducements often used to influence voters. Notably, drugs accounted for ₹230 crore, while freebies and other items were valued at over ₹231 crore.

The Commission has also emphasised that while enforcement remains strict, authorities must ensure that ordinary citizens are not unnecessarily troubled. District Grievance Committees have been set up, and violations can be reported through the C-Vigil platform.

As polling nears, the ECI’s message is clear—tight monitoring will continue to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process.
