New Delhi: Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, today addressed the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) probationers of the 2022 and 2023 batches in New Delhi. He emphasised the importance of fiscal prudence and frugality but cautioned that these should not come at the cost of efficiency. He stated, “Financial integrity is the absolute essence; once compromised, it is lost forever. Develop a mechanism for happiness and satisfaction that does not compare you with those in the private sector. You are the ancient guardians of economic discipline.”

Speaking about the privilege of serving the nation, Dhankhar remarked, “Being in service of Bharat, home to one-sixth of humanity, is a blessing. While other opportunities may offer greater financial rewards, the satisfaction of serving our motherland and upholding our civilisational ethos is unmatched.”

Addressing the need for respect and care for veterans, he noted, “The morale of the armed forces is determined by how we treat our veterans. If they are in good spirits, those serving on the frontlines will be motivated. You have a deep connection with pensioners and must show absolute empathy. Never create issues in pension disbursement. Technological advancements have improved efficiency, but challenges will always arise. Have empathy.”

He further urged officials to treat pensioners with respect, stating, “Act with devotion. They are like parents to you, our senior citizens and veterans. Assisting them, especially in person, will make a significant impact. They are not retired; they remain dedicated to serving the nation.”

On financial discipline, Dhankhar warned against shortcuts, stating, “Integrity is the safest route. Shortcuts may seem tempting, but they often lead to complications and setbacks.”

Reflecting on global security, he stressed the importance of preparedness given regional and global conflicts, saying, “Given our security climate and global tensions, our level of preparation must be beyond what we currently anticipate. Our nation is strengthening its defences.”

Highlighting the importance of security from a position of strength, he added, “Security is assured through strength, which comes from preparation. Modern warfare has evolved, and we must stay ahead.”

The Vice-President urged public servants to prioritise the nation. “Commitment to the nation cannot be just an idea. Alongside fiscal discipline and operational efficiency, consider what you can contribute individually.”

He also emphasised strengthening family ties, promoting indigenous knowledge, and fostering inclusivity. “Prioritise family values. Support environmental awareness and sustainable living. Embrace indigenous knowledge and economic self-reliance. Be Vocal for Local. Avoidable imports—such as clothing, furniture, and toys—drain billions from our economy and take jobs from our people.”

Concluding, he stressed national unity and resilience, stating, “For 5,000 years, we have upheld inclusivity despite extreme challenges. Invaders and oppressors have attacked our culture, yet we have stood strong. Now is the time to put national interests first, fostering unity and brotherhood.”

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Controller General of Defence Accounts Devika Raghuvanshi, Additional Secretary of Rajya Sabha Secretariat Vandana Kumar, and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
