Tamil Nadu: Several districts, including four taluks in the Nilgiris district, as well as Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore districts, have declared a holiday for schools today. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicts isolated heavy rainfall across the state. The formation of a low-pressure area over the East-central Arabian Sea on November 8, influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast and adjoining East-central Arabian Sea, is reported. The system is expected to move nearly westwards and become less marked over the same region in the next 24 hours, according to the Met.
Kotagiri in the Nilgiris district recorded the highest rainfall with 228 mm. Continuous rainfall led to landslides at five locations on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway line, resulting in the cancellation of mountain train services. A landslide also affected road traffic in Kotagiri, leading to diversions via Coonoor to Mettupalayam. Moderate thunderstorms occurred in several districts, including Tenkasi, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Tiruvallur.
The Northeast Monsoon remains active throughout the state, with Chennai and surrounding areas also experiencing rainfall. Due to heavy rain in lower Kothagiri, the NMR Mountain train No. 06136 Mettupalayam – Udagamandalam train and Train No. 06137 Udagamandalam – Mettupalayam train for today (09.11.2023) have been canceled. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates isolated heavy rainfall to persist over Tamil Nadu on November 9, followed by a significant reduction thereafter.
