Hydrogen Bus

Leh: Aiming for a Carbon-Neutral Ladakh, NTPC is in the process of establishing a Hydrogen Fuelling Station, Solar Plant, and introducing a fleet of five fuel cell buses for operating within the city routes of Leh.

On August 17, the inaugural hydrogen bus arrived in Leh, marking the initiation of a three-month-long phase involving field trials, roadworthiness assessments, and obligatory regulatory procedures. This marks a significant milestone as India’s pioneer endeavor to introduce hydrogen buses on public roads.

Situated at an altitude of 11,562 feet, the groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Mobility Project is situated alongside a dedicated 1.7 MW Solar Plant that generates renewable energy. A remarkable aspect of this venture is the innovative design of the fuel cell buses, configured to function efficiently in sub-zero temperatures and the thin atmosphere characteristic of high-altitude regions.

NTPC remains resolute in its commitment to attain a Renewable Energy capacity of 60 GW by 2032, positioning itself as a prominent player in the fields of Green Hydrogen Technology and Energy Storage. The company is actively pursuing various initiatives to expedite decarbonization, including Hydrogen blending, Carbon Capture technologies, Electric Vehicle buses, and the development of intelligent NTPC townships.
