New Delhi: In response to recent media reports alleging a failure in procuring contraceptives and potential disruptions to India’s family planning program, the Union Health Ministry has clarified the situation. Contrary to ill-informed claims, the current stock position of contraceptives is deemed sufficient to meet the requirements of the National Family Planning Programme.
The Central Medical Services Society (CMSS), an autonomous body and the central procurement agency under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, plays a crucial role in procuring condoms for the National Family Planning Programme and the National AIDS Control Programme. In May 2023, CMSS successfully procured 5.88 crores pieces of condoms for the Family Planning Programme, ensuring an ample stock position.
The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) is receiving 75% of its free condoms supply from M/s HLL Lifecare Ltd. The remaining 25% is set to be procured by CMSS, following recent approvals. Importantly, there has been no instance of shortfall due to delays in procurement by CMSS. The organization has already published tenders for different condom varieties in the current financial year, and these tenders are in the advanced stages of finalization.
To allay concerns, the Union Health Ministry is actively monitoring the situation, conducting weekly review meetings to oversee the tendering process and supply position of various medicines and medical items procured by CMSS for different programs under the Ministry. The Ministry emphasizes that there is no cause for worry, and the necessary steps are being taken to ensure the smooth functioning of national health programs.
