New Delhi: In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Annual Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit at Bharat Mandapam, underscoring India’s commitment to shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a responsible and ethical manner.
During the inauguration, the Prime Minister walked through the Global AI Expo, where he witnessed India’s vibrant AI spirit and the innovative contributions of the Indian youth in the AI sector. The Prime Minister highlighted India’s leadership role in AI talent and ideas, citing examples from the AI exhibition that demonstrated how technology is driving social change in the country.
Expressing delight in India leading the GPAI in 2024, the Prime Minister addressed the gathering and emphasized the transformative nature of AI. He underscored the need to make AI more transparent, inclusive, and trusted, asserting that AI’s impact on global development should be guided by democratic values.
Speaking about India’s policies, the Prime Minister outlined the government’s commitment to “AI for All” and the launch of a National Program on Artificial Intelligence. He announced the upcoming AI Mission, aimed at enhancing computing powers and promoting AI applications in agriculture, healthcare, and education. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of upskilling and reskilling, particularly in Tier 2 and 3 cities, to ensure the equitable growth of AI across the nation.
Addressing the negative aspects of AI, the Prime Minister highlighted challenges such as deepfake, cybersecurity threats, and data theft. He proposed the creation of a framework for Responsible Human-Centric AI governance, echoing India’s commitment to ‘AI Principles’ reaffirmed during the G20 New Delhi Declaration.
The Prime Minister urged global collaboration to establish a framework for ethical AI use, including the testing and development of high-risk AI tools. He posed questions on data sets, audit mechanisms, and the possibility of introducing a Software Watermark for AI-generated information.
As part of India’s efforts to make digital services inclusive, the Prime Minister suggested using AI to provide services in local languages. He also proposed leveraging AI to revive dormant languages, preserving cultural knowledge.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the GPAI Summit as a platform for exchanging ideas and learning. The summit, scheduled from December 12-14, 2023, will feature sessions on AI in global health, education, and data governance, along with an AI Gamechangers Award and an India AI Expo.
Union Minister for Electronics, Information & Technology, Ashvini Vaishnav, Minister of State for Electronics, Information & Technology, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, and other dignitaries were present at the inauguration. The summit will witness the participation of GPAI experts, global AI gamechangers, and top industry representatives.
