Tiruchirappalli: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched, dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone for a range of development projects worth around ₹5,650 crore in Tamil Nadu. The initiatives, unveiled during his visit to the historic city of Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), focus on strengthening the state’s infrastructure, improving connectivity, expanding clean energy access and boosting economic growth.
Addressing a large gathering at the event, the Prime Minister said the projects would bring significant benefits to the people of the state, especially the youth. “These projects will boost energy access, connectivity, and create thousands of jobs for the youth of Tamil Nadu,” he said.
The projects span several sectors, including clean energy, petroleum-related manufacturing, highways, railways and rural road connectivity. Together, they are expected to enhance the state’s transport network, support industries and improve the ease of living for residents.
One of the major announcements of the day was the laying of the foundation stone for Bharat Petroleum’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) network. The project, worth ₹3,700 crore, aims to provide Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to nearly nine lakh households as well as several commercial establishments in the Nilgiris and Erode districts.
The CGD network is expected to significantly improve access to cleaner and more efficient fuel in these regions. Highlighting the environmental impact of the initiative, the Prime Minister said the project would contribute substantially to reducing pollution.
“The positive environmental impact of this project over just eight years will be similar to the planting of four crore trees,” he said.
In another major step aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing, the Prime Minister dedicated the Indian Oil Corporation’s Lube Blending Plant in Chennai to the nation. The facility is among the largest of its kind in the world and is designed to meet the growing demand for lubricants from multiple industries.
According to the Prime Minister, the plant will play an important role in supporting the country’s manufacturing ecosystem under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. He noted that increasing domestic production would also help reduce the need for imports.
“The increase in local production of lubricants also reduces imports and saves money for the nation,” Modi said.
Rural connectivity also received a major boost with the inauguration of 370 kilometres of rural roads constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). These roads are expected to improve access to basic services for people living in villages.
Better roads will allow villagers to travel more easily to hospitals, schools and markets, while also helping farmers and small businesses connect with larger markets.
Highlighting the importance of rural infrastructure, the Prime Minister said that roads play a key role in strengthening the rural economy.
“Each road lifts the rural economy and increases Ease of Living,” he said.
The Prime Minister also announced a highway bypass project at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, a historically significant site known for its grand temple built by Emperor Rajendra Chola. The temple is recognised as a UNESCO heritage monument and attracts visitors from across the country and the world.
The new bypass will divert heavy traffic away from the temple area, helping protect the monument while also improving road safety and travel convenience for visitors.
Speaking about the project, Modi said the move would ensure better safety and preservation of the region’s cultural heritage. “This means better safety for everyone,” he remarked.
The event also highlighted progress in the state’s railway infrastructure. The Prime Minister noted that eight railway stations in Tamil Nadu have recently been modernised and redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat programme.
As part of the day’s announcements, new train services were flagged off connecting several important locations across the state. These include routes linking Nagercoil, Coimbatore, Rameshwaram, Tirunelveli, Mayiladuthurai and Karaikkudi with other parts of the region.
The new services are expected to improve mobility for passengers while also supporting tourism and local trade.
Rail connectivity plays an important role in boosting economic activity in Tamil Nadu, especially in regions that attract large numbers of pilgrims and tourists, such as Rameshwaram and other historic towns.
By improving access to these destinations, the government hopes to create new opportunities for businesses and generate additional employment in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of Tamil Nadu and its people. He said the central government would continue working towards strengthening infrastructure and supporting economic growth across the state.
“We are working day and night for the state’s progress and we will continue to do so,” Modi said.
The projects launched during the visit are expected to contribute to long-term development in Tamil Nadu by improving infrastructure, expanding clean energy access and strengthening connectivity between urban and rural regions. Together, they mark another step towards boosting the state’s economy while improving the quality of life for its residents.
