Chennai: The G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, led by India, is scheduled to host its third and final meeting in Chennai from July 24 to 26. This marks the first instance of a dedicated working group for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), demonstrating India’s dedication to tackling global challenges posed by disasters and climate crises, as stated in a press release.

This meeting will convene representatives from G20 countries, international organizations, and knowledge partners to collaborate on formulating a statement outlining shared commitments and vital recommendations pertaining to the working group’s main focus areas. These areas encompass Global Early Warning Systems, Resilient Infrastructure for Disaster and Climate, Financial Frameworks for Disaster Risk Reduction, Disaster Response Systems, and the Ecosystem-based Approach to DRR.

Prominent figures, such as P.K Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister; Mami Mizutori, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative; Raditya Jati, Deputy for Systems and Strategy at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency of Indonesia; Pedro Piacesi de Souza, Second Secretary at the Brazilian Embassy in New Delhi; and Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa Ambassador, are expected to participate, underscoring their commitment to advancing DRR and fostering cooperation among nations.
