New Delhi: Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Textiles and Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, emphasized that Indian consumers are now demanding high-quality goods and services. He mentioned that the government is extending support and providing a reasonable timeframe to producers to adapt to new quality standards, aiming to establish India as a reliable source of high-quality products.

Goyal made these remarks during the concluding session of the ‘G20 Standards Dialogue’ held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. He stressed the importance of harmonizing standards with international bodies to align India with globally accepted quality norms. Goyal also underlined the need to move away from maintaining dual standards for products and instead focus on ensuring that every product manufactured in India is of high quality.

He further highlighted the importance of consumers having confidence in the quality of products made in India. Goyal acknowledged that developed nations could provide valuable insights in this regard, emphasizing the necessity of creating a robust framework through engagements like the G20 Standards Dialogue for countries seeking guidance. He expressed optimism about India upgrading its standards ecosystem, including testing laboratories, and working towards mutual recognition agreements with other nations to achieve high-quality standards for a sustainable future for all.

Goyal also mentioned that the theme of the dialogue, ‘Zero Defect, Zero Effect,’ was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi nearly a decade ago. He emphasized the Prime Minister’s commitment to sustainability and the global awareness created by him. Goyal envisioned a future where sustainability becomes an inclusive paradigm.

The Union Minister stressed that sustainable growth is essential, and inclusivity ensures that no one is left behind. He cited the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as crucial elements for setting standards and achieving sustainability. Goyal highlighted the importance of Affordable Clean Energy, emphasizing that India is focused on recycling, reuse, and minimizing waste, aligning with the global need for sustainable practices.

He further stated that the government’s role is to facilitate, not disrupt, processes, and that India, by producing high-quality products and services, can have a global impact.
