Mumbai: In a significant move towards fostering collaborative efforts among Maritime Heads, the Indian Navy introduced ‘MAHASAGAR,’ an outreach initiative aimed at promoting Active Security And Growth for All in the Region. MAHASAGAR, a term signifying the vast ocean, saw its maiden edition unfold on November 29, 2023, with Adm R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, leading a high-level virtual interaction.
During this inaugural session, Adm R Hari Kumar engaged with Heads of Navies/Maritime Agencies and Senior Leadership from IOR littorals, including Bangladesh, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. The central theme of the interaction, ‘Collective Maritime Approach towards Countering Common Challenges,’ underscored the pressing need for harmonizing and collaborating capacities and capabilities within the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This initiative aligns seamlessly with the Government of India’s vision of SAGAR, focusing on ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region.’
Throughout the session, Principals from participating nations candidly discussed common maritime challenges and emphasized the necessity of addressing them collectively and cooperatively. Adm R Hari Kumar, CNS, stressed the importance of finding ‘Regional Solutions to Regional Problems,’ echoing the collaborative spirit of MAHASAGAR and its commitment to enhancing security and growth in the Indian Ocean Region.
