Dubai, UAE: Prime Minister’s Departure Statement:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a departure statement on 30 November 2023, outlining his objectives ahead of the World Climate Action Summit to be held in Dubai as part of COP-28.
In response to the invitation extended by H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Prime Minister Modi will attend the summit on 1 December 2023. Expressing delight at the significant role played by the UAE in hosting this event, he acknowledged the nation as a crucial partner for India in climate action endeavors.
Reflecting on India’s commitment to climate action rooted in its civilizational ethos, the Prime Minister recalled the country’s emphasis on environmental responsibility even amid rapid social and economic development.
Highlighting India’s proactive stance on climate issues during its G20 Presidency, the Prime Minister referred to the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, which laid out tangible steps for climate action and sustainable development. He expressed optimism that COP-28 would build on the consensus reached during the G20 meetings.
The upcoming summit provides a platform to assess the progress made under the Paris Agreement and set the course for future climate action. During the Voice of Global South Summit hosted by India, the Global South advocated for climate action based on principles such as equity, climate justice, and common but differentiated responsibilities. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for substantial support, including climate financing and technology transfer, to aid the developing world in achieving sustainable development.
Pointing to India’s track record, the Prime Minister cited achievements in renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, energy conservation, and Mission LiFE as evidence of the nation’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
Anticipating participation in special events on climate finance, the Green Credit initiative, and LeadIT, the Prime Minister also expressed eagerness to engage with other world leaders in Dubai to explore avenues for accelerating global climate action.
