New Delhi: A total of 889 candidates from eight States and Union Territories (UTs) will compete in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) informed through a press relase on Saturday. This number includes 20 candidates for the rescheduled poll in the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency (PC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The ECI reported that 1,978 nominations were submitted for 57 parliamentary constituencies across seven States and UTs, not including the rescheduled poll in PC 3-Anantnag-Rajouri of J&K. The fourth phase of elections is set for May 13, with phase six scheduled for May 25.

According to the ECI, the highest number of nominations came from Uttar Pradesh, with 470 submissions across 14 PCs, followed by Haryana, which received 370 nominations across 10 PCs. The Ranchi parliamentary constituency in Jharkhand saw the most nominations at 70, followed by North East Delhi PC in the national capital territory of Delhi, with 69 nominations.

After reviewing all nominations, the ECI found 900 to be valid. In Anantnag-Rajouri, 28 nominations were filed in phase three, with 21 deemed valid. The ECI also noted that the average number of contesting candidates per parliamentary constituency in the sixth phase is 15.

The deadline for filing nominations for phase six across all seven States and UTs, excluding the rescheduled poll in PC Anantnag-Rajouri, was May 6.
