Jan Aushadhi Kendra

New Delhi: A total of 106 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been opened at railway stations across the country as of 30 June 2025, to ensure the availability of quality and affordable medicines for the general public, including rail passengers. This information was provided by Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Smt Anupriya Patel, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.

These Kendras form part of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). As of now, 16,912 JAKs have been established across India, with 8,660 of them located in rural areas. To enhance access in remote and underserved regions, the scheme has partnered with the Ministry of Cooperation for setting up JAKs through Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and other cooperative societies.

On average, 10 to 12 lakh people visit these Kendras daily to avail themselves of quality medicines at affordable rates. Over the last 11 years, the initiative has led to estimated savings of ₹38,000 crore for citizens, compared to the cost of equivalent branded medicines.

To maintain seamless availability of medicines, an end-to-end IT-enabled supply chain system has been established, including one central warehouse, four regional warehouses, and 39 distributors. The availability of 400 fast-moving Janaushadhi products is monitored regularly. Furthermore, a stocking mandate for 200 key products—comprising the top 100 Janaushadhi products from both the scheme’s basket and market demand—has been enforced. JAK owners who maintain these inventories become eligible for performance-based incentives.
