Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates SemiconIndia 2023

Jharsuguda, Odisha: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled a series of landmark development initiatives in Odisha, underscoring the government’s commitment to driving self-reliance and prosperity in the state and across the nation. Addressing a large gathering in Jharsuguda, the Prime Minister invoked the blessings of Maa Samolei and Maa Ramochandi, and warmly acknowledged the affection of local children and youth who presented him with artworks.

Joined by Odisha Governor Haribabu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi, Union Minister Jual Oram, Deputy CM Pravati Parida, BJP leaders Baijayant Panda and Manmohan Samal among others, the Prime Minister rolled out projects worth thousands of crores across infrastructure, housing, education, telecom and industry.

Among the key highlights was the launch of BSNL’s indigenous 4G services, rolled out from Jharsuguda on the occasion of the telecom giant’s 25th anniversary. With nearly 100,000 towers, this expansion is expected to revolutionise connectivity for 20 million people, including those in remote villages and border regions. Modi emphasised that India has now joined the select group of five nations to develop its own 4G technology, adding that the towers will be ready to seamlessly transition to 5G.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Amrit Bharat train service from Berhampur to Surat, strengthening vital links for the lakhs of Odias who live and work in Gujarat. He announced nearly 50,000 new houses under the Antyodaya Housing Scheme, with over 40,000 homes sanctioned for tribal families under PM Janman Yojana, describing it as a “historic step” for the most marginalised communities.

In a major industrial push, Modi confirmed that two semiconductor units and a semiconductor park will be set up in Odisha, marking the entry of the state into one of the world’s most advanced technology sectors. He also unveiled a ₹70,000 crore shipbuilding package, which is expected to attract investments of ₹4.5 lakh crore and generate millions of jobs, with Odisha positioned as a key beneficiary.

Reiterating his government’s philosophy of “from chips to ships”, the Prime Minister declared: “This decade is crucial for Odisha. The strength of its people and its youth will drive the state from poverty to prosperity.”

The event also marked the launch of the MERIT scheme, aimed at modernising technical institutions such as engineering colleges and polytechnics, ensuring that young people can access world-class labs and skills training in their hometowns.

Highlighting tax reforms, Modi said the recently introduced GST Savings Festival is delivering significant relief to households and farmers. He cited savings of up to ₹20,000–₹25,000 annually for middle-class families, along with reduced taxes on tractors, farm machinery, and tendu leaves.

Turning to healthcare, the Prime Minister outlined the success of the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan, under which over eight lakh health camps have been organised nationwide, screening more than three crore women for diseases including diabetes, TB and breast cancer.

Underscoring Odisha’s rising profile in connectivity and infrastructure, Modi pointed to six operational Vande Bharat trains, the modernisation of 60 railway stations, and improved mineral revenue that is boosting state finances. He concluded with a resounding call for unity and development, urging the crowd to join him in chanting: “Jai Jagannath!”
