New Delhi: The Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, today announced a series of landmark measures aimed at strengthening the coal sector and improving the lives of its workers. Speaking about the initiatives, he credited the “dynamic leadership and visionary guidance” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for driving reforms that balance performance with people’s welfare.
In a move described as “historic for the Coal Pariwar”, the Ministry has substantially enhanced insurance cover for employees, raising the benefit up to ₹1 crore – without any premium payable by the workers. For the first time, non-permanent employees too have been brought under insurance protection, extending financial security to a wider section of the workforce.
Other major steps include:
- A uniform dress code for Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries, symbolising unity and equality from top management to frontline workers.
- Increased ex-gratia benefits, with compensation for bereaved families rising from ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh.
- A Performance Linked Reward (PLR) of ₹1,03,000 for every worker of CIL, its subsidiaries, and Singareni Collieries Company Limited – a festive season bonus acknowledging their dedication.
“These initiatives are not just about numbers; they are about dignity, security, and recognition,” Reddy said. “They reflect the Government’s belief that development must go hand in hand with welfare.”
The Minister also emphasised that the coal sector is setting new benchmarks in production and efficiency while keeping compassion at its core. “Together, the Coal Pariwar has proved that India’s strength lies in the unity of its workers and the clarity of its vision,” he added.
Quoting the Prime Minister’s mantra of Reform, Perform, Transform, Reddy said the sector will continue to play a pivotal role in India’s growth story, helping the nation not only power its own progress but also support global economic resilience.
