Murthal, Haryana: The 8th Convocation Ceremony of Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science & Technology turned into a moment of pride and reflection as the Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed graduating students, urging them to build a strong, responsible and progressive nation.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice President congratulated the graduates and highlighted a significant achievement—around 64 percent of the gold medal winners were women, while women made up nearly half of the graduating class. He described this as a clear sign of positive social change and credited initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao for driving a meaningful shift in Haryana’s gender balance.

He also paid tribute to Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram, calling him a symbol of integrity, social justice and visionary leadership. He noted that Chhotu Ram’s work for farmers and marginalised communities helped transform rural India. His focus on cooperative institutions and fair land practices laid the foundation for a strong agricultural system, which continues to support India’s food security and rural development.

Reflecting on the broader vision of a developed India, the Vice President spoke about the importance of self-reliance. He said that Aatma-Nirbhar Bharat is not just a slogan, but a call for innovation, confidence and indigenous thinking.

He recalled India’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting how the country developed vaccines and provided them free of cost to its citizens. India also extended support to more than 100 countries, showcasing its commitment to global well-being and cooperation.

Encouraging students to look ahead, he spoke about the growing importance of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, Quantum Computing and Green Technologies. He urged students to explore these areas with curiosity and responsibility, and to use their knowledge to contribute to society and nation-building.

At the same time, he expressed concern over the rising issue of substance abuse among youth. He called upon students to stay away from drugs and instead lead a healthy, meaningful life. He encouraged them to become ambassadors of a drug-free society and influence others positively.

The Vice President reminded students that success is not just about achievements, but also about character and resilience. He stressed the importance of staying strong during difficult times and maintaining integrity in all aspects of life.

He also spoke about the need to decolonise the mindset, saying that education should empower individuals to think independently, take pride in India’s heritage and contribute confidently to global knowledge.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including the Governor of Haryana and Chancellor of the University, the Chief Minister of Haryana, a Cabinet Minister and the Vice-Chancellor.

The convocation marked a significant milestone for students, not just as an academic achievement, but as the beginning of a journey filled with responsibility, opportunity and purpose.
