GeM Milestone

New Delhi: Gone are the days of dusty files and shady deals for offloading old government junk. The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has stepped in with its Forward Auction module, turning asset disposal into a slick, transparent online affair that’s raked in over ₹2,200 crore between December 2021 and November 2025.

This digital wizardry has hosted more than 13,000 auctions, drawing over 23,000 registered bidders and 17,000 auctioneers keen to snap up everything from scrap to spare land.

How the Forward Auction Magic Works

Picture this: a government office has piles of outdated laptops, rusty vehicles or unused buildings gathering dust. Instead of haggling in backrooms, they list it on GeM. Bidders jump in with competing offers, and the highest bid wins. Departments set a reserve price, lay down rules, and watch the action unfold live on a secure platform – no paperwork mountains, just real-time bidding.

It’s a game-changer for all sorts of stuff: e-waste like printers and IT gear, industrial machines, scrap metals or oils, end-of-life cars, and even lease deals for flats, dorms, parking spots or toll booths. From local scrap yards to big real estate players, anyone’s game as long as they’re registered.

To join, folks hit the GeM site, sign up via the bidder link, flash their PAN, verify email, and pony up an earnest money deposit if needed. Auctions are public, time-limited, and locked down tight – though some sensitive ones stick to pre-vetted crowds.

Real Wins Across the Country

The numbers aren’t just stats; they’ve delivered real results. Take the State Bank of India auctioning 100 EWS flats in Aliganj, Lucknow – it fetched a whopping ₹34.53 crore, earning GeM a thank-you note from SBI for the smooth, fair process.

Then there’s New Delhi’s National Zoological Park, long stuck with unusable junk. GeM helped them sell above reserve price, clearing space and boosting efficiency. Other hits include FCI Aravali Gypsum selling screened gypsum for ₹3.35 crore, Jammu Division ditching 261 condemned vehicles, Border Roads Organisation offloading salvage, a five-year dorm lease in Gulmarg, and boating rights at a Spurtar lake.

These stories show how GeM’s turning headaches into cash, nationwide.

From Messy to Modern: Why It Matters

Back in the day, dumping government assets meant delays, opacity, and dodgy deals. GeM flips that script. It cuts admin hassles, sparks fair competition, squeezes better prices from public property, speeds up scrap clearance, and even helps the planet by handling e-waste properly.

No more fragmented, paper-choked systems – now it’s one digital hub with clear rules, visible bids, and merit-based wins. Ministries, departments, and PSUs are jumping on board, proving digital governance isn’t fluff; it’s delivering.

Bigger Picture for Better Governance

This isn’t pilot territory anymore; Forward Auctions are the new normal for asset disposal. They align with India’s push for clean, efficient public spending – think less waste, more revenue, greener practices.

As more departments log on, GeM’s proving that tech can make government work smarter for everyone. Local dealers get a shot at deals, taxpayers see better returns, and old assets find new life. It’s a quiet revolution, but one that’s adding up to billions.
