AHMEDABAD: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 27 September inaugurated development projects worth ₹1,472 crore and flagged off India’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad.
He also inaugurated a WAG-12 maintenance shed being established for the maintenance of railway locomotive engines. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was among those present at the programme.
Focus on cleaner railway operations
The launch of the LNG-powered train adds a cleaner-fuel option to railway operations. Shah said the step would contribute to environmental protection.
According to the government, the railway projects initiated in the Sabarmati division are intended to improve environmental sustainability, passenger amenities and railway safety.
₹1,472 crore development package
The projects inaugurated at the event have a combined value of ₹1,472 crore. The package includes railway-related infrastructure and the new locomotive maintenance facility at Sabarmati.
The WAG-12 maintenance shed is intended to support upkeep of high-powered locomotives and strengthen maintenance capacity in the railway network.
The government said the projects form part of efforts to upgrade transport infrastructure while reducing the environmental impact of railway operations.
