NEW DELHI: The application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for 2026-27 has been extended to 31 October 2026, giving eligible students more time to apply through the National Scholarship Portal.

The scheme provides ₹12,000 a year to eligible students from economically weaker sections to help them continue their education after Class VIII.

New application and verification dates

Students must submit their applications by 31 October. Institute Nodal Officer verification must be completed by 15 November, followed by District Nodal Officer verification by 30 November 2026.

The National Scholarship Portal has accepted applications since 1 June. Students must complete One-Time Registration before applying.

By 30 September, 88,522 fresh applications and 1,97,133 renewal applications had been submitted. Students who have already applied should ensure their applications are verified within the revised deadlines.

Who can receive the scholarship?

NMMSS offers one lakh fresh scholarships each year to eligible Class IX students who qualify through selection examinations conducted by state and Union Territory governments. The scholarship can be renewed from Classes X to XII, subject to the prescribed academic requirements.

Eligible students studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools receive ₹12,000 annually through direct benefit transfer to their bank accounts.

To appear in the selection test, students must have secured at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class VII. A relaxation of five percentage points applies to SC and ST students. The applicant’s parental income must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh a year.
