New Delhi, October 21: The Ministry of Defence on Wednesday signed a contract worth about ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to buy Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I) for the Indian Army.
The contract was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
What the low level light weight radar does
According to the ministry, the LLLR-I can detect and track fighter-size aircraft as well as mini and micro drones, and it can also prioritise aerial targets. The ministry said this will help the Army counter the threat from unmanned aerial systems.
Domestic manufacturing
The ministry called the purchase a significant step towards making air defence platforms in India. It said the order would support the country’s defence manufacturing base, including micro, small and medium enterprises, in line with the government’s Viksit Bharat @2047 goal.
