New Delhi, October 22: India and Poland have agreed to double their bilateral trade by 2030, according to the India-Poland joint statement issued on Thursday after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in New Delhi.
Tusk is on an official visit to India from 21 to 23 October with a delegation of around 100 chief executives and industry representatives. The two leaders reviewed progress on the India-Poland Action Plan for 2024-2028, adopted when Modi visited Poland in August 2024 and the relationship was raised to a Strategic Partnership.
Trade and investment
Modi invited Polish companies to expand their investments in India, while Tusk described Poland as a gateway for Indian businesses into Central and Eastern Europe. Companies from both sides were encouraged to look at partnerships in industrial machinery, defence, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, mining and critical minerals, energy and ICT. The two countries also agreed to restart their bilateral working group on agriculture.
The leaders called for early signing, ratification and implementation of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement. They also agreed to carry out joint research on artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum technologies, and to build startup partnerships.
Defence and security
A Defence Industry Dialogue was proposed to develop a framework for industrial cooperation, including co-development and co-production where both sides agree. India and Poland expect to sign an agreement on the mutual protection and exchange of classified information soon.
The two leaders agreed to hold a dialogue on counter-terrorism and condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on 22 April 2025.
Minerals, flights and education
An MoU on geology, mining and critical minerals is under negotiation, and the statement points to possible cooperation on battery recycling and rare earth refining. Civil aviation authorities were asked to hold talks on more direct flights between the two countries.
An agreement on cooperation in culture, science and higher education is to be concluded soon. A cooperation agreement between the National Archives of India and Poland’s State Archives has been concluded and will be signed shortly.
Global issues
Poland repeated its support for India’s membership of a reformed and expanded UN Security Council and for India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat in 2028-29. Poland also said it would join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and India invited it to join the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuels Alliance and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
The statement recalled Poland’s help to more than 2,000 Indian students stranded in Ukraine during Operation Ganga. Tusk invited Modi to visit Poland.
